I'm so glad to finally find a few other people who remember my favorite clapping game!!! This is how I remember it; it's so much fun!

The spades go two lips together,
Tie them together,
Bring back my love to me,
What is the me=he-he-ning;
of all these flow-ow-ow-ers,
They tell the story, the story of love from me to you,
My heart goes bumpboddy ump ump,
bump boddy ump ump,
over the sight of you,
you are my one and only,
I love you personally,
Won't you please marry me?
Across the sea, just you and me.
Cha cha cha.
Jitterbug.

My daughter and I have so much fun with this; I wish I could remember more lyrics!

We, my mom and i would love to tell you the proper version of the tulips clapping song: The spade says tulips together
Tie them together
Bring back my love to me oh, oh, oh
What is the meaning?
Of all these flowers
They tell my story
My story of love from me to you
My heart goes thumpidy thump, thump
Thumpidy, thump, thump over the sight of you,
You are my one and only
I love you passionately
This is my story
My story of love from me to you
Cha, cha, cha!

The ending to "Miss Susie" with the steamboat (but we called it Miss Lucy in Pennsylvania where I am from) went-

......the boys are in the cellar
pulling down their flies
in the buttermilk...

Skunks in the graveyard, pee-yew!
Boys all naked- whoo-hoo!

anonymous

miss susie had a baby
his name was tiny tim
she put him in the bathtub
to see if he could swim
he ate up all the water
and drank up all the soap

but it wouldnt go down his throat
miss susie called the doctor
miss susie called the nurse
miss susie called the lady with the alligator purse
measles said the doctor
chicken pox said the nurse
PIZZA said the lady with the alligator purse
miss susie kicked the doctor
miss susie kicked the nurse
miss susie kissed the lady with the alligator purse

Robin

The ending to squishybear's "Miss Susie" as I know it goes like this (and we said "Miss Lucy" for this one)
.......the boys are in the bathroom
pulling up their
flies are in the butter
the bees are in their hives
the boys and girls are kissing
and they're parents are left behind!

I grew up in Ma. so that's just our version.

My favorite one was this one...and I still don't know if it's TULIPS or TWO LIPS. I always thought TULIPS! It's a hand clapping game.

The spades go tulips together
tie them together
bring back my love to me
What is the meaning
of all these flowers?
They tell the story
the story of love from me to you.

My heart goes thumpitty ump thump
thumpitty ump thump
over the sight of you.

You are my one and only
I love you passionately
this is the story
the story of love
from me to you.

I saw a ship sail away (OY VAY)
It took ten years and a day (OY VAY)
Now my love is far far away (OY VAY)
and I love him so. Oh yes I do.

Any other versions of this???? I always loved doing this one.

Teaching English here in Taiwan has let me relive all those songs that I sung as a child, as there is nothing like a song to help English learning - students pick up blending of words, pronounciation, and I get to subversively teach them! Fantastic. Anyway, I'm picking songs that I especially love, and learning a few myself. The Grand Old Duke of York was one I taught recently, along with such favourites as The Cat Came Back, I've Been Working on the Railroad, and so on. I haven't had a class of beginning students, so I have not had the chance to do those early nursery rhymes, but I'm kinda excited to...

(I realize this was only somewhat tangentially related, but hey, if you didn't know before, it's new to you.)

Marcia Lynx Qualey

Miss Mary Mack, Mack, Mack all dressed in black, black, black with silver buttons, buttons, buttons all down her back, back, back....

She jumped so high, high, high she touched the sky, sky, sky and didn't come back, back, back till the fourth of July-ly-ly.

No...that's wrong. Well, the right lyrics are in Nadine Bernard Westcott's book. Hmm. And probably online.

squishybear

How about this one?

Miss susie had a steamboat
the steamboat had a bell
Miss Susie went to heaven
the steamboat went to
Hello operator please give me number nine
and if you disconnect me
i'll kick you from behind
the refrigerator there was a piece of glass
Miss Susie sat upon it and cut her big fat
ask me no more questions
tell me no more lies
the boys are in the bathroom zipping up their
flies are in the meadow,
the bees are in the park
Miss Susie and her boyfriend are kissing in the
dark is like a movie
a movie's like a show
a show is like a tv screen and that is all
I know I know my mother
I know I know my pa
I know I know my sister
With the alligator bra!

Our library has a program called "Book Babies" where you sing rhymes and play with your babies. My boys' favorite is Noble Duke of York:

Oh the noble Duke of York
He had ten thousand men
He marched them up to the top of the hill
And marched them down again

When they're up, they're up
And when they're down, they're down
And when they're only halfway up
They're neither up nor down

Helene

I grew up in WI and am familar with the second two. However, I learned the Miss Lucy one this way...

I had a little turtle, his name was tiny tim
I put in the bathtub, to see if he could swim
He drank up all the water, he ate up all the soap
And now I have a turtle with a *bubble* in his throat - hiccup!
