FROG
By Mary
We call our baby The Frog.
Yep, The Frog. Both words capitalized, of course. If we're feeling lazy it's just "Frog." Regardless, our little critter got dubbed with the name of an amphibian; a squishy-faced, bog dwelling, banjo-throated little soul.
When we found out we were pregnant it didn't seem right to call such a welcome addition "it." I dare say that we're not the only people who felt this way - "it" seemed so impersonal, so blah. You see we HAD to do something!
We didn't just stumble upon our moniker - there was a method behind our madness, indeed!
When we first began our road to adoption (which didn't work out - but that's another entry for another time when I'm not so sleepy), Meagan went shopping one day and returned saying, "Don't be mad at me. I bought something."
You see, she knows better than to even say things like this - she KNOWS I couldn't be mad at her even if I wanted to. I think it's her eyes.
I digress.
So the gift she was bearing this particular day was a so-small onesie with a phrase embroidered on it -
My Frog.
This was the first piece of clothing that was bought for our baby regardless of how he or she came into our lives. So that little onesie was folded and placed in our drawer, awaiting that tiny body to fill it up. From that point on whenever we discussed our future child it was always referred to as "Frog."
A year and a half and several heartbreaks later when Frog still hadn't came to us, I think we almost forgot about that onesie tucked away amongst our over sized t-shirts. With our adoption plans dashed we had to point ourselves in a new direction. We knew the Gods had a plan but it was so hard to follow it when we were aching for our baby so badly. After some research we lighted upon A.I. - artificial insemination.
We inseminated for one cycle. Each time saying prayers and meditations to every God and Goddess of every culture that we could think of. Each time with soft music playing in the background to make our baby feel cozy enough to say, "Hey, I like this. I think I'll grow a bit."
I was at work several weeks later when I got an emergency call from Meagan.
Her emergency was a positive pregnancy test.
Her emergency was....
Our Frog.
