The Order (page 2)

Cody finished mopping the locker room floor, and rushed downstairs to sweep. He couldn't stand the idea that he'd miss the action when Fargut scared the new kid. He had been the new kid a few years ago and he never forgot the fright ol' Fargut gave him. Cody figured it a right of passage in Ryton, and he didn't want to deprive anyone of that honor. He hastily swept the floor, and got out of the gym before Coach Hardat could criticize his work.

Just beyond the marina Cody walked into the waist high grass of the marsh. It was the perfect place for a Canadian Goose to hide her young, or for a young man to hide a boat. It wasn't much of a boat, in fact it wasn't a boat at all. It was a large rusting tub like the top of an oversized wheel barrel. It sat low in the water, and small waves lapped over the shallow sides as Cody made his way across the cove to Fargut's Rock.

While everyone else was at band rehearsal, or soccer practice, or sailing in the cove, Cody was mopping the boys locker-room. That was Coach Hardat's punishment for talking during one of his health class lectures.

A tall lanky sort of boy with blonde hair and freckles peered around a row of lockers. "Cody, come on, hurry up, one of the new kids is going fishing at Fargut's Rock. You don't want to miss that when old man Fargut catches him. He could scare the fur right off a rabbit."

Cody shuttered and looked at his friend, "I can't, Jake, I've got to sweep the whole gym floor when I'm done with this."

Jake waved off Cody as he walked away. "Wait a minute, Jake, " quizzed Cody, "how would a new kid even know about Farguts Rock?"

Jake mocked surprise, then shrugged his shoulders and smiled a sly smile. "Catch you late Cody," he said, as the door closed behind him.

Just off of Main Street, Garret strode in to Tommy's pizzeria with two junior high girls giggling right behind him. A couple of football players rose to greet him with high-fives. Most of the other kids looked down or pretended to read a menu so as to avoid his gaze. Garret was quite a legend in Ryton Cove. No one really knew that much about him, and Garret liked it that way. But if you asked anyone at school, most people would say, he is not a guy that you want to mess with.

$400 Comic Books

Colter climbed up on the bed to read with Julie, this is something he new this summer with him actually doing the reading. He called to me as I passed the door, asking for the book he'd forgotten.

Making my way to his book shelves, I battled my way through the legions of toys he had scattered strategically across his floor. That's when I saw them, laid out in front of me like a brand new stack of bills.
