Hanukkah begins tonight. During the holiday, we light candles to honor the brave warriors who showed faith in themselves and in God. I didn't know the Maccabees, but I am grateful to them. And there are others who shine like beacons in my life: friends, family, and people I don't know, especially writers, who are lighthouses to me, drawing me in to the shore, closer to home. Even though we've never met, thank you Anna Quindlen, Ellen Goodman, Anne Lamott, Natalie Goldberg, Geneen Roth, Charles Kuralt, Steve Hartman, Linda Ellerbee, Jennifer Crusie, Nancy Goldstone and William Goldman. And thank you, all who read. You are the mirror that reflects us.
