While everyone else was at band rehearsal, or soccer practice, or sailing in the cove, Cody was mopping the boys locker-room. That was Coach Hardat's punishment for talking during one of his health class lectures. A tall lanky sort of boy with blonde hair and freckles peered around a row of lockers. "Cody, come on, hurry up, one of the new kids is going fishing at Fargut's Rock. You don't want to miss that when old man Fargut catches him. He could scare the fur right off a rabbit." Cody shuttered and looked at his friend, "I can't, Jake, I've got to sweep the whole gym floor when I'm done with this." Jake waved off Cody as he walked away. "Wait a minute, Jake, " quizzed Cody, "how would a new kid even know about Farguts Rock?" Jake mocked surprise, then shrugged his shoulders and smiled a sly smile. "Catch you late Cody," he said, as the door closed behind him. Just off of Main Street, Garret strode in to Tommy's pizzeria with two junior high girls giggling right behind him. A couple of football players rose to greet him with high-fives. Most of the other kids looked down or pretended to read a menu so as to avoid his gaze. Garret was quite a legend in Ryton Cove. No one really knew that much about him, and Garret liked it that way. But if you asked anyone at school, most people would say, he is not a guy that you want to mess with.
